Day breaks

Alarm goes off

He rolls off, grunting

She climbs out, unsmiling

He leaves for the day

She leaves for the day

Night falls

He climbs into bed

She rolls into her corner

He looks silently at her cold back for a few seconds,

and heaves over closer to the edge

His eyes remain open

Her eyes remain open

He thinks

She thinks

“Why do I even bother at all,” he thinks

“Why do I even bother at all,” she thinks

“She thinks I’m weak and lazy, I’m sure,” he thinks

“He does not even care, I’m sure,” she thinks

“Why do I even care so much?” he thinks

“Why can’t he ever take out time from work for me?” she thinks

“Maybe I will find me a woman that appreciates my effort and strength,” he thinks

“Maybe I need a man who will be around to hold me, and tell me he loves me,” she thinks

The silent double one-sided conversation continues

No tête-à-têtes exchanged

We are like jelly in their hands

We do and say the most absurd things

We give up our lives of solitude for the desires of their hearts

Who are these beings to control us in this way?

They move quickly into our lives and shut the door behind them

Cinderella sports her golden gown for the ball on our beds

Huge bears splay across the beds, each locked in an unblinking muse

Our covers become too small, worse on cold nights

Playgirl singlet in our drawers

The overpowering smell of flowers in the poker room

I look into Johnny Depp’s eyes across the room, as I take a leak

The pink fluffy toilet seat tickles our behinds as we bend over to do the first ‘S’

The sink is expected to be clean after we do the second ‘S’

And the bathroom walls must be wiped clean, after the third

We share the room with over twenty people

Tony the TV, Freddy the fridge, Chloe the carpet, Shivers the sheets, Sleepy the slippers…

We dare not address them curtly

They are people, just like us

We must love them,

Or don’t we love them?

Then, quickly and subtly, they flee from us

Leaving behind only Tony, and Freddy, and Chloe…

We see them in the streets and wave

They turn, this time away from us

Then, slowly, but surely, we understand

They simply toyed with our one-track minds

Daydreaming on the
wintery steps of Malone
and I feel so alone
Summer never comes
and I'm just a soldier
in the trenches,
Can't wait to get blown home
Like a solo desert storm

I've got castles in my view,
Vacations in Peru,
a cherry on my lips.
But Summer never comes,
I'm every soldier's dream,
the last one in the trenches,
And yet
I can't wait to get blown home

They say dreamers only dream
A bird can only fly, a rose can only be
caught in the hair of an angel in the sky
And so I find myself
stuck in contradictions,
losing to mental circumcision

And I can't wait to get blown away
Cos there's no one to show me
the way back home
